ADHD Assessment

What is ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity that are inconsistent with the child’s developmental level. In order to form a diagnosis, the behaviours and difficulties associated with ADHD have to prove difficult with an individual's functioning. ADHD is associated with a variety of issues including poor academic performance, interpersonal relationship problems and, later in life, employment problems.

If a early diagnosis is made, this will provide an opportunity for early intervention, that in turn will improve the young person’s quality of life. For some individuals symptoms remit with age (most commonly overt hyperactive and impulsive symptoms), while others experience persistent symptoms and associated impairment into adulthood. The prevalence of ADHD is suggested to be around 5% in children and 2.5% in adults. In childhood up to four times more boys than girls are diagnosed with ADHD, whereas in adulthood females are just as likely to be diagnosed as males.
